◻️ Landlord registration and licensing

[June 2020]

The impact of the virus has increased the financial pressures on many people, especially those on lower incomes and young families.  To offer some protection we are calling for the registration and licensing of private landlords in the Borough.

Several councils have introduced such schemes, in what could be forerunners to changes in national legislation.

Oxford City Council, for instance, have operated a voluntary system of “Landlord Accreditation” for many years.

Benefits of such a scheme include:

  • Prospective tenants of registered and licensed landlords can be assured of good property conditions and competent management.
  • Misunderstandings and disputes are reduced.
  • Having a named landlord responsible for a property makes it easier for the Council to pursue landlords if they fail in their legal obligations.

Charging for the licence will enable the Council to pay for the scheme’s costs.
